About Xiamen
Xiamen is one of modern China's best-kept secrets. Located in southeast China, Xiamen is a lively and thriving city with everything from historical landmarks to golden beaches. Deemed as China's "cleanest city," this island community off the northeast coast in the Fujian province continues to rocket to the top of vacation destination lists. Foreigners began trading through the tantalising island-port in the 1600s and have remained enchanted by its beauty ever since. There are kilometres of beaches, perfect weather and some of the best seafood in the country (the secretariat can agree to that!). Sub-tropical weather and the city's love of greenery have resulted in meticulously manicured gardens and roads decorated with flowers and trees. Located between Shanghai and Hong Kong and within view of Taiwan it possesses all of the manifestations of a major city while still maintaining the alluring charisma of a vacation resort.
One of the main attractions is Gulangyu, a tiny island just across the water from southwest Xiamen that was once a foreign enclave after the Treaty of Nanking in 1842 but is now the best place in the city to relax. The western district is the oldest and most interesting area of the town to explore, with interesting architecture, parks and winding streets. From close by you can catch a ferry to the small island of Gulangyu. The island is less than 2 square kilometres in size so wandering around its winding paths is no great strain. Climb up Sunlight Rock, the highest point of the island and look out over the well-preserved 19th century buildings. We have organised an excursion to the island during the conference.
Food in Xiamen
Western travellers to Xiamen will find the food is very agreeable and delicious. Throughout the meeting, lunch and dinner is included in the registration fee. The organisers have sampled and carefullly chosen the menus for each meal, to ensure it is to everyones liking, in fact you will probably love the food! If you have any special requirements, e.g. no seafood or vegetarian you should indicate this in the appropriate section when registering and you will be catered for.
Xiamen cuisine is the main representative of Fujian cuisine which is famous throughout China. Seafood is the main ingredient and the seafood in Xiamen is famous for its extreme freshness. Non-seafood eaters must remember to specify this in their registration or to email the organisers in advance.
